I was introduced to BuffMother by my friend and fellow chiropractor, Lisa Staudt.  At that point in my fitness “career”, I had been doing Jazzercise 5-6 days a week for 6 years.  I was frustrated due to the fact that I was working out hard, yet getting nowhere.  I felt like I was losing muscle and shape and gaining weight.  Talking with Lisa about BuffMother just made sense.  I wasn’t sure if I wanted to give up Jazzercise, but my true love had always been lifting weights.  I liked the idea of being able to do whatever exercise program you wanted.  I was also intrigued by the thought of my hormones directing how I worked out.  I think everything in our body is connected in some way, shape or form. I am thrilled with my weight loss, inches lost/gained, the way I look and how my clothes fit.  But I’m more excited to know that I am STRONG!  It has given me the confidence that I had lost over the years.  It’s very intimidating to step into a gym after 18+ years.  Having the knowledge and “plan” from “Hormonal Timing” helped me ease back in.

“All Star” Kermane of OH

Kermane is not only our All-Star of the day, but It’s her birthday Today!!!  Happy birthday Kermane!!

Kermane has an amazing testimony; she is a true NO EXCUSES kind of a gal!  You name the obstacle, she’s overcome it.  Now with the support of the Rally Room and with Hormonal Timing she has built herself the best body of her life.  She never ceases to amaze me with her progress and her determination to be a GREAT example for her son.  She is on fire to build a legacy of health for him and is currently attacking a new goal to run a 5k race in the near future!!!  Kermane just celebrated 6 years cancer free last Friday~ NOW !! that’s something to celebrate!! I am so, so happy for her and blessed that she’s have shared 5 of those past years with TEAM BUFFMOTHER !! ♥ I love you!

Kermane’s thoughts on Hormonal Timing– as a Mother and Cancer survivor:

This is a picture of me AFTER I came home from having my son.  I was sleep deprived, fat, depressed and miserable, plus I had a little one who was depending on me for everything and I could barely take care of myself at the time.  It was my worst picture, because during my last trimester I just ate whatever I wanted and didn’t work out at all.  After fighting breast cancer, chemo and reconstruction surgeries I was ready to take care of me again so I decided to go for my goal.

The Hormonal Timing System helped fill in the missing pieces when it came to diet and exercise for me.  For too long I was getting discouraged when I would fall off the wagon, not realizing my hormones had a lot to do with that.  From tracking my cycle with Hormonal Timing I realized I am full of energy the first two weeks of it and start to feel less energetic the closer my period comes.  I realized about two days before my period I was zonked and should not try to kill myself working out then.  It helped me gear my exercises towards my hormonal cycle in a positive way.  I think the key point of Hormonal timing is that we have to realize that our bodies are ruled by hormones, like it or not and that we should allow our bodies to follow our natural cycles and not try to push ourselves beyond that because that makes us more prone to failure.

Why Kermane LOVES the Rally Room!

I have always been interested in exercise.  As a child I had excess babyfat to go with my glasses and long hair resulting in some self esteem issues.  By the time I hit fifteen I was what you would call a cardio bunny.  Also I was skinny fat, I had no muscle tone but growing up in a household where my Mother was obsessed with cardio I didn’t realize at the time there was other types of exercise.  Cardio was great for sweating but I still wanted to eat like my friends and ended up battling bulimia for about three years in the closet.

About the time I married my husband I realized I should be lifting some weights and bought 6.6lb dumbbells thinking I was the bomb!  Ten years into my marriage I had dumbbells up to 10lbs and did all kinds of Jane Fonda type weight lifting.   My Mother passed from breast, liver, colon cancer 3 days prior to my son’s birth, depression hit hard but I lifted myself out of that for my son and husband.  When my son was about two years old I started the Atkins diet and lost some weight only to be diagnosed with breast cancer. I was depressed. I was 34 years old and afraid my 35th birthday would be my last.  I gained about 25lbs thru the long process of recovery and reconstruction.  After my main battle was over I realized I felt sluggish and I wanted to lose the weight I gained.

While reading a website I found an article by Michelle about why muscle burns fat. Something clicked in my head. I went to her Buffmother website and read all the articles, I joined her Michelle Berger group. I was embarrassed to post my workouts because my weights seemed small compared to everyone else’s.  Then Michelle started the Rally Room site for women only which I joined and my love of strength training began. I joined contests on the Rally Room site to motivate me and they did.

I’m addicted to it now, I like how everyone encourages everyone and if necessary tries to get someone to see it is necessary to eat, you got to feed those muscles.  I have made so many friends here. If you’d asked me a year ago if I would be friends with people living in Canada, Texas, Florida, Tennessee and Michigan I would’ve said you were crazy. But I have.  There are women on here that know more about me than my best friend, I am that close to them.  If they needed me I would fly there in a heartbeat to help the out with any struggles they might be suffering.

When I joined the Rally Room I was depressed and my body image was low, I struggled with self-doubt and had to fight the urges of bulimia.  Now I realize that though my body became sick it is a miraculous thing. It has recovered and rebounded.  I can bend in some amazing yoga poses that normal people probably could not do. It gave life to my son and he is a beautiful creature. My body is strong, stronger than I ever gave myself credit for. My Mother was not the most positive role model and delighted in bringing my self image down and I am proud to say if she was alive, no matter what she could not bring me down right now.

Since joining my hips went from about 43 inches down to 37inches, I have lost 3.5inches off my waist.  My strength has increased tenfold. I can leg press a 380 pound man if I wanted, and squat a 180lb person. My chest which was ravaged thru surgeries and reconstruction is becoming stronger everyday and it will be only a matter of time before I can bench press 100lbs.  My arms used to look like chicken wings, they now look like my arm idol Jennifer Aniston.

I realize that cardio is not the only type of exercise.  I strength train my body 4 to 5 times a week now and delight in my strength increasing. I realize its ok to have a day off from working out now, in fact it is good for your body. I love encouraging people to realize that no matter your age or current fitness level you can achieve your goals.  If people can look at me and be encouraged from my struggles in life then I am willing to tell my story to any woman who wants to listen.

I’ve discovered that my body needs extra supplements that I am low on them and when I take them my mood swings improve tenfold.  I’ve also discovered cardio doesn’t have to be hours but can be as little as 20 minutes if you do interval training.

The Rally Room has given me great support and all the wonderful ladies in in encourage me when I am depressed and lift my spirits to get back on the fitness wagon. More than anything it gives me the spirit to continue when the body is weak and I thank you for it Michelle!

Boo! It’s FRIDAY the 13th!

I missed blogging yesterday~ I had a busy “errand” type day. Got loads of stuff done and decided to switch my day off. So yesterday i didn’t workout but today I will.

I have already seen nice results on my scale- man I love BUFFING hormones!!

Wed- cycle day 5-129

Thurs-cycle day 6-127.5

Friday-cycle day 7-126.8!!

Okay, so my diet yesterday was not as good as Wednesday’s but I didn’t do horribly either- Contest day 4′s Diet focus was to have no dairy and I had more than ususal, lol~! I bought some Greek yogurt to try for the first time- had it and got a bloated belly ache- STUPID me~ that’s what always happens when I have dairy, lol!

Today’s diet plan is to be perfect!!

Ill keep a running tally:
2 cups Coffee- w/ half & half and a tsp of sugar
some white tea as Iced tea

Egg whites- from a carton (never really had these b4)- cooked them for 1 min in the micro- stiring 3-4 times in the process- good!

I will go run my sprints in about 10 mins, then I hope to play some tennis later!!!

Gunner started football yesterday, he’s on a the RAVENS- anyhow he WON the 3 kid tug of war tournament!! He was pumped!!  I am excited for him this season!!  I’ll be praying for no injuries!!

k- gotta go get running and running FAST!! I am a speeding bullet

*update* Ran in the 100+ degree heat!  10 mins + 6 X100 meter sprints + 5 min fire hot cool down in it~ I just did and thought I was going to com-bust!~

How BuffMother! Began:
In 4 short years Michelle became the mother to 4 children.  Michelle spent every moment of her days selflessly caring for her family and finding time for her self was impossible.  She was a physical and mental mess: out of shape, over weight, overwhelmed, overstressed, tired, and on the verge of depression.  She was too busy to eat right and the thought of exercise was frustrating and seemingly pointless.  It was then that she hit rock bottom. Monday: Legs and Butt and ABS
Tuesday: Back, Bi’s and Shoulders 20-25 min. of intervals after lifting

I make sure to warm up for 10 min. before lifting and make sure to work on my flexability between sets. Each workout lasts around an hour and if I need an extra day off I take it. I generally lift 5-6 days a week and make sure to do intervals 3 or 4 times a week. Consistency in lifting is the key to getting buff!

A Word on Supplements:
In regards to my success in a figure competition world, that is filled with the use of illegal supplements: I do not use anything illegal to enhance my physique or increase my performance capabilities, I am natural! I do take some sports supplements that have been proven safe and effective for anyone to consume. Some of those include: l-glutamine, l-lysine, l-tyrosine, creatine, NO2 products, CLA, flax seed oil, St. John’s Wart, caffine, whey protein, sugar free Red Bull, Lubriflex, etc. Exactly what I take depends on how I feel and what I am trying to accomplish. There is a lot of money wasted on sports supplements that are ineffective, so do your research before purchasing anything.

Over the past 5 years I’ve experimented with a training strategy designed for women only. My goal was to create the fastest possible method for women to achieve radical physical transformation. I believed the key was to capitalize on the positive effects of our hormonal fluctuations while also diminishing the negative effects.

I used myself as my first test patient. I had just given birth to twins by C-section which were my 3rd and 4th babies in less than 4 years. My body was stretched out, fat, depleted in every way and just plain disgusting.

At the time, I just wanted to see radical transformation in my body. I had no idea that I was on the verge of discovering something that would change the lives of thousands of women. To make a long story short, my body transformed radically by using what I now call Hormonal Timing .

I’m sure you’ve felt it: that sudden lack of ambition that just seems to overcome you. You might say, “This time I’m going to stick to my plan!” And you do for a while, but then you suddenly realize that you’ve been slacking for the last 5 days! What happened? You then blame yourself thinking, “I don’t have any self-discipline, self-control, motivation, etc…” You feel guilty about your lack of willpower.

Maybe you feel like you’re close to reaching your goals but just can’t quite get there. You work so hard but when you look in the mirror you are always disappointed! You constantly ask yourself, “What am I doing wrong”? What am I missing?!?

The fact is the vast majority of us have a personal battle going on inside. It may be about your diet, exercise habits, smoking, drinking, scale/weight, dress size, etc.

    Do you have those days when you just wanna eat? I mean really “pig out,” on things like doughnuts, cookies, chips, chocolate, etc? It is a sad-but-true fact that our hormones cause us to DESIRE these items.

Our Hormones Cause These Desires.

    Specifically during the time of the month when your concentrations of hormones are at their highest, you will desire quick easy sources of carbohydrates (carbs), the easiest source being junk food. These carbs spike the secretion of serotonin, your “feel good” hormone so-too-often you find your cravings seem out of control.

    What can you do to avoid this? Simply, having a plan to eat enough healthy carbs really helps keep your cravings under control, and supplementing your diet with the proper vitamins and nutrients can help your cravings diminish.

arrow Hormones Control Your Motivation Level & Mood (Mentality)!

    The psychological affects of hormones are well documented. According to the Mayo Clinic, there are many symptoms of hormone imbalances including anger, low self-esteem, difficulty concentrating, irritability, tension and more. An imbalance in hormone levels may cause you to feel sad, lonely, apathetic, self-critical, and unsure of yourself. Just a little bit of being “down” can wreak havoc on your diet and fitness efforts.

    My motivation to accomplish anything, especially anything hard, often disappears during the second half of my cycle. When I hit day 22 of my cycle, my reason behind working out or dieting gets lost. I say to myself, “Why am I doing this? I don’t want to!” I also find myself taking less time out for my other needs.

    Even simple things like doing my hair, nails, shaving, and putting on make up, become difficult and a pain. Personally, I was never a consistent exerciser until I was aware of my own hormonal lack of motivation, or HIF, and took action against it.

    On the positive side of things, the instant your hormones drop, signaling your body to menstruate, your motivation will begin to rise again… and after a couple days you will feel powerful and ready to conquer mountains. This powerful feeling typically continues until a few days after ovulation and when you will feel the “lazy bug” hit again.

    This is when you may fall off your fitness/diet program. Time and time again I have had clients, friends and family who literally “fall off the face of the earth” at this high hormone time of the month. This is classic Hormone Induced Failure (HIF).

arrow Hormones Control Your Energy Level & Sleep Patterns:

    Do you have days where you are just dragging, limp and lifeless? Yet you can’t figure out why? Hormones control your energy levels. Based upon the balance of your hormones in your body your energy levels may be high or low.

    Each month, energy levels rise and fall according to the balance of estrogen, progesterone and testosterone in your system. If a you are unaware of this cycle when you hit a low energy phase you may think you are just being wimpy, not eating enough, getting sick, etc. BUT, if you know that your low energy is caused by your hormones you will be able to utilize my program to prevent these low-energy days, or at least get through them without beating yourself up about it and losing all momentum. You will be able to honestly tell yourself, I am tired just because of my hormones and tomorrow I will be fine.

    As your hormone levels rise toward the end of each month, your sleep may be disturbed, causing energy during the day to be scarce. Often times simply allowing yourself more rest or a nap during this time of the month is all you need to be happier, healthier, and consistent in your fitness efforts.

Conversely, after your period is over and through the remainder of the first part of each monthly cycle, your energy levels are high, you sleep deep, and have energy to accomplish your objectives.

arrow Hormones Control Water Weight Gain And Belly Bloat:

    Oh man! This can be bad!! As a woman, the scale is not your friend for several days of the month. No matter how perfect you may be in your diet and exercise, the scale has a mind of its own when hormones run high.

    Your rising hormone levels will cause you to retain water toward the end of each monthly cycle. This is part of why you appear “soft” in comparison to a man. Your natural sex hormones help keep your skin full and plump, which is all fine and dandy, until it holds onto 3 pounds more than just the day earlier and fluffs you up so much that your pants don’t button!

    Water retention doesn’t just happen in one localized part of your body – it affects your face, hands, feet, belly, butt, etc. Another nasty result of water retention is that our cellulite looks even more dramatic at this time of the month. I point out to my clients that I can actually “see” the hormones in them – it is visible as ripples due to hormone metabolites (toxins), especially in the hips, legs and abdomen.

    As you become leaner, you will experience greater water weight fluctuations because muscle cells hold a lot more water than fat cells. Don’t lose heart when this happens!! It is actually a good sign that you are headed in the right direction with your body composition.

    As you go through the month, your hormones effect your metabolism (the rate at which your body burns calories). Documented studies show you can actually burn up to an extra 500 calories per day during the week prior to your period. NO WONDER you feel like you want to eat everything in sight!

    Your body is telling you that you need the extra energy. Why then do you feel horribly guilty if you eat a bit more? Probably because you are already bloated and feel frustrated, so eating extra food seems like the worst thing to do.

    Don’t let guilt turn your fitness quest upside down. Accept that fact that you may need a few more calories right now, plan for that, and enjoy your indulgence. This will enable you to end the cycle of guilty binges and emotional eating before they start. As a result you will build your fitness momentum instead of quitting due to Hormone Induced Failure!

    The list of other ways hormones affect you is long but here are a few: digestive issues, allergies, etc. I’ve personally been concerned about these symptoms from time to time. However after, I connected these symptoms to my hormones, I was free from worry because I knew, “It’s just my hormones.”

  • Every woman is a bit different in regards to her biggest hormonal struggle. But no matter what, there are effects from your hormones–good ones and bad ones–and they must be considered in your diet and fitness program.
